Rex's Tower is visible from every surrounding county. How about
that!! The top of the tower stands at 1,535 feet! I'm not going to
give driving directions here, if you get lost just look out your
car window for the tower!
Who is Rex you ask? Rex Humbard is the well-known American
television evangelist from the "Cathedral of Tomorrow" show! At the
peak of Televangelist popularity, he was on over 600 TV stations!
So, he had some cash to spend.
**Update June 2007** Turns out my info about the build date was
incorrect, Rex built this tower in the late 60's, not the mid 80's.
Thanks to a couple of 'seasoned' cachers who knew more about it
than I. =)
Anyway, Rex planned for a rotating restaurant at the peak of his
tower. Kind of like the Space Needle. Things didn't go well so he
abandoned the erection of this tower restaurant and left town. The
reason behind it is still truly unknown.
One theory is: He got caught up in one of his own
crusades. Supposedly, the city of Cuyahoga Falls
came down on him because he'd inspired an ordinance in which no
establishments were allowed to serve alcohol within a hundred yards
of any church. Rex wanted to serve alcohol at his tower restaurant
so he built it to exceed 101 yards in height, to stand above his
Cathedral of Tomorrow. But, the city established that the
restaurant's base was still was too close to his church, under 100
yards. True? Who knows but sounds good.
What ever happened to Rex, he moved his whole operation down
south to Florida to be closer to South America. His popularity was
growing there while his popularity here was waning. Sold everything
here in Cuyahoga Falls to Ernest Angsley, an up and coming
televangelist. Who turned around and sold this "Tower of Babel" to
a businessman who simply sells antenna space on it today.
**UPDATE MAY 2007** According to fellow cacher Scubaman, Rex
apparently was selling securities to finance his tower. Selling
them without a license! Caught by the FEDS, he had to stop and so
ran out of money to finish the tower! Thanks for the info
Scubaman!
The tower stands alone at 494 feet, pretty impressive when
standing at it's base looking up. Give it a look!
Satellite pictorial hint for ya! Check out that long shadow it's
casting! Do you see the green arrow?
