Geocache Description:


Gyarmat is located along Road 83 between Gyor and Pápa.

The village
The first written mention of the village dates back to 1153. The ancient roman road connecting Gyor with Mursella passed the village to the north. According to a letter dated 1268, cup-bearers were the inhabitants at that time. Other residents included foresters and wine makers of the King.
The village is most noted for its:

Row of wine cellars

The row of wine cellars above the village is a nice sight for any visitor. The buildings with thick clay walls preserve the original state of the vineyards from 1812. You can take a half a mile long pleasant stroll along the cellars starting from the edge of the village. The walk will take you along on the ridge of the wine hill. The road is lined with numerous little (gunyhó) old huts. Several of them still have old presses in use. A vineyard belongs to each hut, so there is great activity here at the time of grapes-picking in October. Visitors are invited into the little huts for a drink. The basalt cap of Somló can be seen from the top of the hill.
