Porkkala Parenthesis
Porkkalan vuokra-alue oli alue, jonka Suomi joutui vuokraamaan 50 vuoden ajaksi Neuvostoliitolle sotilastukikohdaksi Moskovan välirauhassa 1944. Alueen 7 252 asukkaan suomalainen väestö ja kotieläimet määrättiin evakuoitavaksi kymmenessä päivässä sopimuksen solmimisen jälkeen eli 29. syyskuuta 1944 mennessä, jolloin alue siirtyi Neuvostoliiton haltuun. Alueen vuokraus vahvistettiin uudelleen vuonna 1947 myös Pariisin rauhansopimuksen 4. artiklassa. Alue palautettiin Suomelle takaisin 26.1.1956. Vuokra-alueeseen kuului maata 380,5 km⊃2;, ja vesialueineen sen pinta-ala oli noin 1 000 km⊃2;. Siihen kuuluivat Porkkalanniemi ja Upinniemi, niiden edustalla oleva saaristo sekä manneraluetta niemien pohjois- ja länsipuolelta. Alueeseen kuului suurin osa Degerbyn kunnasta, laajoja alueita Kirkkonummen, Siuntion ja Inkoon kunnista sekä vesialueita ja saaria myös Espoosta. Idässä alueen raja kulki pitkin Espoonlahtea. Kun alue palautettiin Suomelle, Degerby liitettiin Inkooseen, mutta muilta osin kuntien rajat palautettiin samoiksi kuin ne olivat olleet ennen luovutusta.

The parenthesis is the name of the period between 28th September 1944 and 26th January 1956, when the Porkkala area was leased to the Soviet Union as a naval base. This meant that the people that leaved in this area in 1944 were forced to leave. They were given nine days to pack everything that they owned and move away. The area that was to be leased was 2/3 of Kirkkonummi, the southern parts of Siuntio, entire Degerby and parts of Inkoo. It was decided that Porkkala was to be leased for fifty years. The Finnish state paid the farmers and house owners compensation for their lost property. The state demanded repayment of the compensation when the evacuees moved back in 1956. This is one of nine caches in the Porkkala Parenthesis series. The cache is hidden at the end of what’s left of the former pier in Båtvik. The pier was built by Russians during the parenthesis. The railroad from Kela station ended at the pier. This pier was the centre for providing the Russian naval base with provisions from Tallinn and Leningrad among other things. In winter you may have difficulties to reach the cache from Kantvik and Upinniemi peninsula because there is a lane for ships arriving in Kantvik harbour. In winter make sure that the ice is thick enough to carry you!
NOTE! NOTE! NOTE! NOTE! You must not access the fenced area! In summer the cache can only be reached by boat and in winter only by ice because the land area around the cache is enclosed by a fence.
