Geocache Description:

On Manhattan Island, in the heart of New York City, you must find a peculiarly Unidentified Object. This cache is not at the listed coordinates. This is a puzzle cache. Find the Unidentified Object and you will be able to use your GPSr to find the cache. The Unidentified Object is within half a mile of the listed coordinates.

More than a few years ago, an Unidentified Object was deposited on Manhattan Island. The person who initially left it here embedded their name and the year in this object, but did not identify it in any other way. The city was unsure what to do with it and so it was passed between various organizations until it found it's current resting place. You will know it when you find it, because it has no labels of any kind on it. Nothing explaining what it is or why it is sitting here. Nothing to identify it or it's owner, or who if anyone might even be interested in taking care of it. Some have even questioned who owns and maintains the small piece of property it is sitting on.

Once you locate it, find the name and number embedded in it and stand as close as possible to them, but where you can still easily use your GPS receiver.

Start with 379.

Subtract the number found above the name.

Then subtract the number of letters in the last name.

The answer is your heading.

Project a waypoint on this true heading, to a location 428 feet away.

This is where the cache is hidden.

You will not be able to walk a straight line to the cache location. The fastest way is to use your GPSr to project the new waypoint from your current location as you stand next to the Unidentified Object. Then use the GPSr to navigate to the cache.

If you are unsure how to project a waypoint, the most Graceful way to do it would be to read the instruction manual that came with your GPSr first. Most manuals are available on line.

You should be able to navigate to the cache location within a few minutes using this technique, but beware, if you encounter bears you're in the wrong place and should back away carefully.
