Geocache Description:

  Mooghaun hillfort

Mooghaun hillfort is a is a trivallate hillfort, meaning it has three circular ramparts all of which are contained within one another . It was constructed during the late Bronze Age. Radio carbon dating of finds under one of the ramparts gave a date of 1260-930 B.C , obviously the walls where built around or after this time. In 1992-94 excavations took place at Mooghaun as part of the Discovery Programme, and found some evidence of occupation, but none contemporary with the ramparts.

As you follow the path up to the top of the hillfort you will be led to a cashel (this cashel is not of the same period as the hillfort, it was constructed much later) Behind the cashel you can see the remains of three huts that where found during clearing and excavation of the site. These sites are also not contemporary with the hillfort.

It is not certain that Mooghaun was permanently occupied as there is a distinct lack of habitation evidence. It is thought that the hillfort may have played an important role in ritual or communal activities.
