OK, so the real name isn’t Monument Park, it’s really Washington Park, but hey, there sure are a lot of monuments in this one square block park.
Washington Park was originally surveyed in 1833 as a “public square” and has been home to a church, houses, horse wagon parking, and a variety of other things over the years. The City fenced it off and leveled it in 1848 but did nothing with it until 1877 when plants, flowers and shrubs were planted and a 40 foot high Oriental style gazebo was constructed, as well as adding benches and chairs. In 1878 a public fountain was erected at public request. In 1896 Buffalo Bill Cody staged his Wild West show on the grounds, and President McKinley spoke from the gazebo in 1899. Nature and time then took over the park. Dutch Elm Disease and storms took out most of the trees and due to neglect, the gazebo was gone by 1900. Restoration efforts started in the late 1970’s and made the park what it is today. It is now the site of many festivals, political events and demonstrations and just a great place to sit and listen to some of the many bands that perform in the warmer months.
The park has had many monuments placed in it over the years, the most controversial of which was a life sized statue of Dr. Henry Cogswell. He donated a life-sized statue of himself to top the fountain in 1878, despite having NO connections to the City of Dubuque. Vandals pulled the statue down in 1900 and were rumored to have buried it under the footings for new sidewalks. However the statue was not located when new sidewalks were poured in the last couple of years so Dr. Cogswell’s final resting spot is unknown.
To log this cache you must first go to the park and gather some information off of the monuments still in the park, do some quick math, and then go to the final cache location.

The cache’s hiding spot is only a couple miles away in a great hiking and recreation area. It is easy to get to and doesn’t require heavy climbing or bushwhacking. The muggle factor is MUCH higher during the warm months. Cache is a small Tupperware container with a log book and the usual stuff. FTF gets a FTF wooden nickel.
