Geocache Description:

Bridal Veil Falls

The American Falls is one of three waterfalls that together are known as Niagara Falls on the Niagara River along the Canada-U.S. border. Unlike the wider Horseshoe Falls, which is on the Canadian side of the border, the American Falls is completely within the U.S. state of New York.

The falls receive approximately 10% of the flow from Niagara River, with most of the rest going over Horseshoe Falls, from which it is separated by Goat Island. It has a straight line crest width of about 253 m (830 feet). If measured along the jagged lip of the falls, the crest is about 290 m (950 feet) long. The torrent of water passing over the crest of the falls is about 0.6 m (2 feet) deep.

The height of the American Falls ranges between 21 to 34 metres (70-110 feet). This measurement is taken from the top of the Falls to top of the rock pile. The height of the Falls from the top of the Falls to the river is 57 metres (188 feet). Horseshoe Falls is visible in the background. The falls are viewable from a steep angle on the American side, where it is possible to approach to within several meters of the edge of the falls. One can view the falls from the bank of the river, as well as on Goat Island, which is accessible by a pedestrian bridge that crosses the rapids of the Niagara river upstream from the falls. The falls are viewable head-on from the Canadian side in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Please be advised that the location the above co-ordinates take you to may not be accessable in the winter months due to the large amount of ice that builds up on the island. If you are unable to reach the island, you can still log the cache.

We have been contacted by Tom Watt, the Park Director for Niagara Falls State Park in New York.He makes this request: "I request that you implement one of two options with the Bridal Veil Falls cache. Either disable the cache until spring or place a clear warning on the page for the cache indicating the above and that no one should attempt to enter the construction area or bypass the safety measures in place in order to get the picture. They will need to get the picture from Stedman's Bluff or they can get it during the Cave of the Winds tour if they do that attraction. Violators may subject themselves to significant risk, prosecution and fines."

Please read the last paragraph of the description, it is important! In order to log a find on this cache you MUST e-mail us with the flow rate of the bridal veil falls . This can be found on signage located very near and should be easy to find. We'd love it if you could also include a picture of yourself, or team with gps in hand and the Bridal Veil Falls behind you. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in log deletion.
