Herzlichen Glückwunsch. Ihr seid auf dem höchsten Punkt Deutschlands angekommen, der Zugspitze, auf einer Höhe von 2.962 Metern. Genießt die wundervolle Aussicht und das herrliche Alpenpanorama ringsum. Bei gutem Wetter könnt ihr über 400 Berggipfel in vier Ländern zählen.
Hier oben habt ihr außerdem die Möglichkeit, mit einem Bein in Deutschland und mit dem anderen in Österreich zu stehen (z. B. beim Wegpunkt „Grenze“), denn genau auf dem Zugspitzgrat verläuft die deutsch-österreichische Grenze.
Wusstet ihr schon, dass…
… die Zugspitze lt. Deutschem Wetterdienst der Ort mit den meisten Sonnenstunden in Deutschland ist (über 1.800 Stunden pro Jahr im Schnitt der letzten 30 Jahre)?
… die Zugspitze früher drei Gipfel hatte: Ost-, Mittel- und Westgipfel? Als einziger davon ist der Ostgipfel in seiner ursprünglichen Form erhalten geblieben. Der Mittelgipfel fiel 1930 einer Seilbahn-Gipfelstation zum Opfer. 1938 wurde der Westgipfel gesprengt, um Bauplatz für eine geplante Flugleitstelle der Wehrmacht zu gewinnen. Diese wurde jedoch nie gebaut.
… die Zugspitze früher, als es noch den Westgipfel gab, mit 2.964 Metern 2 Meter höher war als heute?
Nach diesen interessanten Fakten wollen wir euch mit diesem Virtual-Cache auch noch drei skurrile Fakten zur Zugspitze näherbringen:
- Der Zugspitzgeist: Der Sage nach ist der Zugspitzgeist ein Vogel, halb Geier, halb Adler, der beständig die Zinnen der Zugspitze umkreist. Auf der unzugänglichsten, höchsten Spitze hat er seinen Horst.
Frage: Was liegt unter dem Horst des Zugspitzgeistes verborgen?
- Die Zugspitze beherbergt Deutschlands höchstes Postamt. Die Zugspitze hat sogar eine eigene Postleitzahl: 82475. Natürlich gibt es hier oben auch Deutschlands höchsten Briefkasten.
Den Briefkasten findet ihr im Gebäude der Bergstation der Eibsee-Seilbahn (Seilbahn Zugspitze) gegenüber dem Souvenirshop auf Ebene 0.
Frage: Wann findet hier am Samstag die letzte Tagesleerung statt?
Hier oben gibt es auch eine Bushaltestelle! OK, richtige Busse fahren hier nur selten, zumindest haben wir bei unserem Besuch auf der Zugspitze keinen gesehen.
Frage: Welche 3 Buslinien sind an der Haltestelle angegeben?
!!! Achtung: Zurzeit ist die Bushaltestelle aufgrund einer Baustelle leider abmontiert. Daher braucht ihr diese Frage aktuell nicht zu beantworten !!!
Nachdem ihr diese Fragen beantwortet habt, geht es jetzt zum Fotografieren. Zunächst die deutsche Seite: Geht zum Wegpunkt „Fotopunkt Deutschland“ und macht ein Foto von euch mit dem Gipfelkreuz im Hintergrund. Euer Gesicht muss nicht zu sehen sein. Alternativ könnt ihr auch euren Cachernamen, z. B. auf eurer Hand oder einem Zettel, auf dem Foto zeigen.
Keine Angst, ihr müsst nicht bis zum Gipfelkreuz gehen. Es reicht ein Foto von der Panoramaterrasse aus. Wer möchte, kann natürlich auch zum Gipfelkreuz wandern und dort das Foto machen. Falls es so neblig sein sollte, dass man das Gipfelkreuz von der Terrasse aus nicht sehen kann, genügt auch ein Foto vom Wegpunkt mit der Terrasse im Hintergrund.
Nun geht es nach Österreich. Geht bitte zum Wegpunkt „Fotopunkt Österreich“. Hier habt ihr einen weiteren tollen Panoramablick auf die umliegende Bergwelt. Macht auch hier ein Foto, was euch mit dem Kreuz mit der Aufschrift „Zugspitz-Bahnen – 2950 Meter – Tirol“ zeigt. Auch hier muss euer Gesicht nicht zu sehen sein und ihr könnt natürlich auch hier alternativ euren Cachernamen, z. B. auf eurer Hand oder einem Zettel, auf dem Foto zeigen.

Did you know, that…
... according to the German Weather Service the Zugspitze is the place with the most hours of sunshine in Germany (over 1,800 hours per year on average over the last 30 years)?
... the Zugspitze used to have three peaks: the eastern, middle and western summit? Only one of them, the eastern summit, has been preserved in its original form. The middle summit fell victim to a cable car summit station in 1930. In 1938, the western summit was blown up to gain construction space for a planned flight control center of the Wehrmacht. This was never built.
... the Zugspitze used to be 2,964 meters high, 2 meters higher than it is today, when the western summit was still there?
After these interesting facts we would like to introduce you to three bizarre facts about the Zugspitze with this virtual cache:
- The Zugspitzgeist: According to legend, the Zugspitzgeist is a bird, half vulture, half eagle, which is constantly circling the battlements of Zugspitze. He has his nest on the most imperfect, highest peak.

- The Zugspitze houses Germany's highest post office. The Zugspitze even has its own postal code: 82475. Of course, you can also find Germany's highest post box up here.
The post box can be found in the building of the mountain station of the "Eibsee-Seilbahn" (Seilbahn Zugspitze) opposite the souvenir shop on level 0.
Question: At what time will the last postal collection take place here on Saturday?
Up here there is also a bus stop! OK, real buses rarely travel up this place, at least we did not see any when we visited the Zugspitze.

!!! Attention: Unfortunately, the bus stop is currently dismantled due to a construction site. Therefore, you do not need to answer this question at the moment !!!
After you have answered these questions, it's time to take pictures. First the German side: Go to the waypoint "Photo point Germany" and take a picture of you with the summit cross in the background. Your face does not have to be seen. Alternatively, you can also show your cacher-name written on your hand or a note in the photo.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to go to the summit cross. It is enough to take a photo of the cross from the panoramic terrace. If you want, you can of course also hike to the summit cross and take the picture there. If it should be so foggy that you cannot see the summit cross from the terrace, a photo from the waypoint with the terrace in the background is sufficient.
Now it's off to Austria. Please go to waypoint "Photo point Austria". Here you have another great panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. Take a photo here as well, which shows you or your GPS with the cross with the inscription "Zugspitz-Bahnen - 2950 Meter - Tirol". Again, your face does not have to be seen. Alternatively, you can show your cacher-name written on your hand or a note in the photo.
