New Years Resolution Event 2014 Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Donnacha: Thanks to everyone for coming along and making it such a great day.

The_Chris expressed an interest in his log for more of this type of event. I have often thought of having a New Years Resolution Old School Event that would involve a more challenging walk. Back in the early days when there were only 4-6 people attending events we would do a 15K+ walk, but as Geocaching became more popular we scaled it back so everyone could attend and enjoy the event.

So maybe we will look at something this Summer. I will create a discussion topic on the forums and Facebook group nearer the time and we can decide on something then. Hopefully we'll get more than 6 people attending this time!

Geocache Description:

New Years Resolution Event 2014

When - Saturday January 11th 2014
Where - Crone Wood, Co. Wicklow
Time - 10.30am Sharp

The 2014 New Years Resolution Event is taking place on the Maulin Mountain Trail, starting from Crone Wood, Co. Wicklow.

The Maulin Mountain Trail provides a high level route across the slopes of Maulin Mountain and will provide magnificent views into Glencree and over the adjacent mountains and valleys.

We will follow the Wicklow Way for about 2Km to Ride Rock where we will turn off and head towards Maulin. Here you will be able to log the first Geocache of the day, Amazing Grace Geocache. As we make our way towards Maulin you will have an opportunity to log Venture Cache before ascending the zigzags. The next cache Maulin, it located just off the summit of Maulin.

The walk is about 8K with a 600M accent, 250M of which is the trek up Maulin. The whole loop should take about 3.5hrs. The walk itself is quite easy going most of the way, however it gets a bit steep after Venture Cache heading up the zigzags for a short period, then levels out. The climb up Maulin is steeper, and for those who want to skip it can do so and follow the track back to the car park. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended for this walk, but as the saying goes "Nobody will be left behind".

As we are in the hills, I would recommend bringing a good pair of walking shoes, warm clothes, wet gear, water and food. As we get nearer to the event, I will provide some weather reports, so I recommend putting the event page on your watch list.

After the walk we will be heading to Enniskerry for refreshments and chat where I have a room booked. Venue is located at N 53° 11.590 W 006° 10.222
