Dia 22 - Chegou a Noite
Mr. Fogg e os seus companheiros esperaram a noite e assim que escureceu foram fazer um reconhecimento em volta do pagode. Os últimos gritos dos faquires extinguiam-se no pesado entorpecimento do “hang” — ópio líquido, misturado com uma infusão de cânhamo — e seria talvez possível passarem por entre eles até ao templo.
O grupo avançou sem barulho através da floresta e chegaram à beira de um pequeno rio onde estava a pira feita de precioso sândalo e impregnada com um óleo perfumado, sobre a qual repousava o corpo embalsamado do rajá que deveria ser queimado ao mesmo tempo que a sua viúva.
Pouco depois o guia parou na extremidade de uma clareira coberta de grupos que dormiam. No entanto junto do pagode os guardas do rajá, iluminados por tochas, vigiavam as portas e passeavam de um lado para outro. No interior decerto os sacerdotes também vigiavam.
O Parsi não foi mais longe. Reconhecera a impossibilidade de forçar a entrada do templo, e fez recuar os seus companheiros.
— Esperemos, disse o general de brigada. É possível que estes guardas também adormeçam.

Day 22 - The Night Has Come
Mr. Fogg and his companions waited for the night and in the dark they made a reconnaissance around the pagoda. The last cries of the fakirs were extinguished in the heavy numbness of the "hang" - opium liquid, mixed with an infusion of hemp - and it might be possible to pass through them to the temple.
The group moved noiselessly through the forest and reached the edge of a small river where the pyre was made of precious sandalwood and impregnated with a scented oil, on which lays the embalmed body of the rajah who should be burned with his widow.
Shortly after, the guide stopped at the edge of a clearing covered with groups that slept. However near the pagoda the guards of the rajah, lit by torches, were guarding the doors and walking from one side to another. Inside surely the priests were also watching.
The Parsi went no further. He recognized the impossibility of forcing the entrance of the temple, and pushed back his companions.
- Let's wait, said Brigadier General. It is possible that these guards also fall asleep.
