How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

You are invited to a Geocaching camping event, held at The Trading Post camp site, north of Wexford in the lovely county of Wexford which will take place on the evening of Friday 23rd of August, starting at 7pm. The event is placed to coincide with a 6 mile walk along a recognised heritage trail taking place on the following day organised by local historians and also a second Geocaching event “with a difference” on Saturday evening.

The camp site itself is a well maintained site, with spacious pitches for tents and gravel hard standing for caravans and mobile homes. Electrical hookup is available on request and it has well maintained toilet and shower facilities (which are included in the price of camping) and has a well stocked shop selling anything required for camping (including some camping items only normally available in the U.K.). There is a camper's room which is equipped with dish washing facilities, a fridge, microwave oven and laundry facilities. There is a children's play area and free WiFi to enable you to log all your finds! It also has its own petrol and diesel pumps. The owners have offered a 20% discount for attendees staying on-site for the event. Booking is through the camp site (see link above) - mention that you are coming to the Geocaching event when you're booking. Please note that online booking is available, but the discount is not offered via this facility. There is no charge for day visitors.

The location is convenient as a destination for many locations in Ireland, whether you're coming from north (about an hour and a half from Dublin) or west (two and a half hours journey from Cork), situated on the old Dublin to Wexford R741 road. It is also convenient for folk wishing to attend from the UK, being only half an hour from Rosslare Europort – and if you choose to travel on the Friday of the event, the Fishguard to Rosslare ferry docks at Rosslare at 6:30pm – perfect timing for arrival at the event! If you're travelling from the UK, check for special "day cruise" rates which could well halve the price of your visit if your intention is to make a fleeting visit.

The camping event itself is open to all, be ye camping or just day visitors and will take the form of a relaxed evening of chat and getting to know each other – I'm encouraging people to come from much further afield than would normally attend an event and stay the night (or few), whether you choose to stay at the camp site or perhaps in local bed and breakfast/hotel accommodation.

Barbecues are welcome – though site rules prohibit any barbecues or fires that damage the grass. I'm told that the camp site may be able to lend us a communal barbecue. Please bring your own food / refreshments. Also, you're encouraged to bring your own seating arrangements too .

This camping event is planned to coincide with an annual organised 6 mile historic walk, starting at the camp site at 9am on the Saturday morning. The walk will follow the route taken by the North Cork Militia and yeomen during the Irish rebellion of 1798 to the site of the Battle of Oulart Hill where they were vastly outnumbered and defeated by the 1000 United Irishmen who had gathered on the hill top, led by local priest Fr. John Murphey . The scenery from this location is stunning and on top of the hill is the largest 1798 rebellion monument in the world – The Tulach a' tSolais (mound of light) which represents the divide between the old and new world. it is envisaged that we will organise transportation back to the camp site at the end of the walk.

Alternatively, there are many caches in the general area for you to find, many of which will take you to some of the beautiful secluded beaches and coves in the area. There are also 17 brand new caches that I have placed along the route of the historic walk, many telling stories of what happened in 1798 along the route.

And speaking of story telling, I have organised another Geocaching event to take place on the Saturday evening in a local 400 year old thatched cottage known as The House of Stories, where locals traditionally gathered to tell stories to each other for many generations and to listen to traditional music played by local musicians. More of this, rather different Geocaching event on it's own page... On a Storyteller's Night.

If you've never been camping before, a Geocaching camping event is the perfect introduction to the "great out-doors" experience. I'd never been camping until I was encouraged to stay at the annual South Wales camping event in 2008, held in Swansea. A small tent isn't that expensive a purchase these days and in the summer months you need little else other than perhaps a matress and bedding.

If you intend to come to this camping event please can you log your intentions below as soon as possible, and please include whether you are camping or just visiting for the event, which nights you are camping, how many are in your party and how many are children. Once you log an attend, you will also get any updates closer to the date from me.

Special request: If you intend to come to the event and are in possession of a gazebo and are willing to bring it with you, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. I hope to have some form of shelter should the evening be … damp. This would mean I wouldn't have to hire one for the event in case of adverse weather.
