Geocache Description:

Easy to find cache on a top of a pyramid mountain.

Keilir is a landmark mountain of the Reykjanes peninsula. Sometimes referred to as the "pyramid mountain", because of it's distinctive shape.

It's not a popular destination among the tourists, but you will often find Icelanders hiking up Keilir on a beautiful summer day. It's a long hike and the view from the top is definitely worth it. On a sunny day it is possible to see the Atlantic Ocean on the south and the Faxaflói bay in the north.

To get there, while driving the road 41 from the airport to Reykjavik, you need to take the the next exit after Vogar. There are signs pointing to Keilir. Then you will have 8 km of rather rough gravel road to go through (4x4 recommended, but not necessary). In the beginning after around 500 m you need to turn right (the road that goes straight is a service road for the power lines).

You can choose from two different parking locations. P1 is the official parking area. A 1,5 h hike from there will take you to the base of the mountain. P2 is an alternative location and the path to the mountain from there is unmarked. Climbing Keilir itself is a bit difficult at the very end. The mountain is steep and there's plenty of loose rock, so take extra attention.

There are two other interesting caches in this area that can make up an exciting itinerary for a whole day! GC2V483 can be accessed if you choose the P2 alternative parking and follow the road up the mountains. The road end with a sealed geothermal well and then there's a beautiful 3 km hike in the river trough. GCVC5X is easier to reach, the parking is just few hundred meters from the P1.

You can read a little bit more about this area from Visit Iceland website:
Keilir is a hyaloclastite mountain. It was created during subglacial eruptions during the ice age. It´s shape makes it distinctive and according to geologists, it probably is a crater plug. In spite of its steep slopes, it is not too difficult to climb, and the view from its top on a fine day is to be remembered. Keilir is the most distinctive landmark of Reykjanes and a symbol of the Reykjanes peninsula. On top of the mountain is a concrete table with a view direction map on a metal plate.
