Callow Drove (Beating the Bounds) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Maple Leaf: The cache was there when we checked today, but was fairly deep in the undergrowth. However, as this is the last of the feeder caches, I have decided to archive it ... so have removed the cache container.
Thanks to everyone that has visited over the last 9 years,

Geocache Description:

There are boundary stones in four places around the Parish Boundary of Axbridge (not to be confused with the two larger ‘Axbridge stones’ at the eastern and western ends of the town). This stone is in the far north-east corner of the parish on Callow Drove.

This is a traditional cache not too far from the stone. However, you will need to locate the boundary stone and find the letter/s on the rear of the boundary stone if you want to find 'Beating the Bounds' cache.

Beating the bounds is an ancient custom still observed in some English and Welsh parishes. A group of old and young members of the community would walk the boundaries of the parish on Rogation Sunday, to share the knowledge of where they lay, and to pray for protection and blessings for the lands. Although modern surveying techniques make the ceremony obsolete, at least for its secular purpose, many English parishes carry out a regular beating of the bounds, as a way of strengthening the community and giving it a sense of place.
