Geocache Description:

Old Log Bridge (WSSS 02)

This is the second of a short series of caches on Mt Wellington that will take you to several historic places that are not often visited these days (and that do not already have a cache nearby). The series is called Wellington's Seldom Seen Sites.

The Site

The cache is in a quiet, secluded spot in Cascades, Hobart. The location is very attractive since it is near a creek and there are lots of ferns, moss-covered rocks and trees. It may be reached by following defined tracks. GZ marks the centre of an old log that serves as a bridge since it spans an unnamed tributary of Guy Fawkes Rivulet.

The area is "behind" (to the west) of Cascade Brewery and is owned by them; public access is permitted. Please note that the land on the other side of the creek (apart from a narrow strip along the creek) is privately owned and contains houses. Although the track continues across this private land and was used before the houses were built it should NOT now be followed (to Jubilee Road).

The Cache

The cache is about 8 metres from the centre of the log bridge and is under the last big rock on the right hand side of the track as you approach the bridge (if you are following the directions given below). It is in a small Sistema box in a black bag. The box contains a log book, pen and a few small swaps.

Please note that the general area is in a wooded valley that will interfere with GPSR reception.

Getting There

There are no signs in the area and there are numerous tracks that are not marked on most maps. Therefore more detailed directions than normal are given.

The cache may be reached from either of two tracks that branch off a major unamed track that we will call for our purposes "Track A". There is also a new walking track in the general area ("Cascade Track") and numerous other lesser tracks.

Track A and Cascade Track run approximately east-west and roughly parallel to Old Farm Road.

Getting to Track A
Track A is a well established track that more or less follows the ridge line from near to Cascade Brewery to the Main Fire Trail (and then on to Middle Island Fire Trail).

There are numerous ways of getting to the track from the vicinity of the brewery. One of the simplest is from where Old Farm Road crosses Guy Fawkes Rivulet.

Another approach is to follow Cascade Track (that starts at Old Farm Road immediately behind the brewery). Follow Cascade Track up the hill until a quite attractive new stone bridge is reached. The bridge crosses the unnamed tributary of Guy Fawkes Rivulet. (Approximate location: S 42° 53.670 E 147° 16.892.) You now have two options.

Option 1 (recommended)
Leave Cascade Track by taking the lesser track to the left. Continue on this track that follows the creek until it eventually joins Track A. Continue uphill on Track A.
Option 2
Continue on Cascade Track until it crosses Track A (approximate location: S 42° 53.699 E 147° 16.748.) Leave Cascade Track and join Track A and continue uphill.

Track A may also be followed downhill from where it crosses the Main Fire Trail. (Approximate location: S 42° 53.860 E 147° 16.184.) Access to here is best from near the Strickland Avenue and Inglewood Road intersection.

Getting from Track A to the log bridge
As you continue uphill on Track A (assuming an approach from near the brewery) you will eventually see two tracks branching off to the left. Both of these tracks lead downhill to the old log bridge. You could follow one of these tracks to the bridge and then return by the other one. There are a couple of small fallen trees across one of the tracks.

The tracks leave Track A at the approximate coordinates:
S 42° 53.796 E 147° 16.547
S 42° 53.822 E 147° 16.450
(These two locations are a bit less than 150 metres apart.)

Related activities

While at the cache site you could explore the immediate area. After crossing the bridge follow an old track down stream and find another log bridge.
