Geocache Description:

This walk in the dell is one of my favorite walks to do with my family and I do it almost every weekend so I thought I'd make a cache that follows it's route.

It is a 5.5km walk which will last around 1 - 2.5hrs depending on the number of caches you do along the way and how fast you walk. This can also be done on a bike but a walk in my opinion is better. There are 8 caches that you can do whilst on this walk. The final location is around 500m away from where you start so if you've parked your car there then it is not far back.

The contents of the cache when placed were: Garmin Geocoin, Travel Bug BB racer #2, mini pack of cards, 2 plastic snails, broken walk'o'meter, various other trinkets and a candle. This is my first multi-cache I've placed so I hope you enjoy the walk!
In the additional waypoints the Prefix 'W' is the waypoint number.
The walk starts at the posted coordinates at the entrance to Craiglockhart Dell at the bottom of Craiglockhart Park. You can park anywhere around this area. This is also the first waypoint. Look at the sign. How many letters?
[Clue A: Number of letters]

Continue on down the path towards the Water of Leith. Turn left when you get to the river so that you are now walking up river. Go across the small bridge just at the small hut and continue straight on (cache GCTHDY is very close at this point).
At the bigger bridge continue straight on, not over the river, still going up river. When you reach the fork in the path, you can go either way – they meet up at the same point anyway.
If you take the high road then cache GCV8RV is very close by.

Fork in the path - Take either route - they meet up at the same point anyway. If you take the high road you can do cache GCV8RV

The 2nd waypoint is at the stone bridge. Look at the 3-way sign. How many words are on it altogether?
[Clue B: Number of words]

Go across the river at the bridge and turn left. Go along and up the path until you come to the old railway line. Join the railway line at this point (there is an additional waypoint for this, waypoint 3).

Joining old railway line - This is where you join the old Railway Line. You head in this direction

Next it is along the railway line heading towards Colinton. At the next set of coordinates there is a telegraph pole. What is the number of pegs sticking out of it minus the number of the actual pole?
[Clue C: number of pegs minus number of pole]

Now you continue on the railway line all the way into Colinton (cache GC28PJ7 is along here at some point too ) going through the old tunnel, where you emerge at the former Colinton Railway station (The start of cache GC1G8T1 is at the car park here). Here you go to waypoint 5 which is a plaque to show the opening date of the Water of Leith Walkway.
[Clue D: ?1 October 1981]

Then you walk under the road bridge and on a bit more until you get to Spylaw Park. This park is popular among young families with a small play park for little kids.

Colinton Playpark - Walk diagionally across this field towards the signposts for the next waypoint

Go diagonally across the field where you will see 2 signs about dog fowling (cache GC1RJYV is very near here). This is waypoint 6.
[Clue E: Civic Government (Scotland) Act 198?]

Then you go back along the edge of the field towards the road bridge again but NOT back onto the old railway line. If you go past some flower beds then you are heading the right way.

Flowers - Walk past these flower beds and you are heading in the right direction

Cross over the bridge after the flower beds to go onto the east bank. Continue under the road bridge and up the track to the road. Once on the road turn left down the hill towards Colinton Parish Church.
Just at the gate to the church there is a plaque. This is waypoint 7. What is the 3rd number of the telephone number?
[Clue F: 44? 2232]

Now you walk on past the church and back onto the path next to the Water of Leith.

Low road back towards the weir - Keep going along this path

The weir - This is the wier from the bridge that you cross. Cache GC1F2A5 is very close

Continue on here and cross over the big bridge at the weir that heads to Katesmill (cache GC1F2A5 is very close here). Go along and up the path to Katesmill where there is another telegraph pole with some engravings on it. This is the final waypoint, waypoint 8.
[Clue G: BT 9L ?0 1I].

From here go down the path, then along, and at the bridge (where cache GC1R6E8 is), continue straight on – don’t go over it. From here just follow the path along the SE riverside (cache CGV8RD is along here at some point).

Now set your GPS to find the cache. The cache can be located at:

55° 55.(A-G)(C+E)(B-D) N' 003° 15.(F)(G-D)(C-(D+F)) W'

Clearing - Set your GPS to find the cache at this point - it is close by

Please ensure that the cache is put back properly. The terrain for this cache is only 3 because of the final location where care is needed. Stealth is not normally required but watch out for anyone coming along the path or on the other side of the river. If the reception isnt too good because of tree cover then hopefully the clue will help.

From the cache location, it is just a short walk back to where you started - just set your GPS to find WP 1.
