Gemalt wurden Sie von der Künstlerin Rosemarie Schinzler aus Freiburg im Breisgau im Juni 1990. Titel des Kunstwerks "alles offen".
"Nördlich der Oberbaumbrücke im Bezirk Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain liegt der längste erhaltene Abschnitt der Berliner Mauer. Das 1,3 Kilometer lange Mauerstück entlang der Mühlenstraße wurde im Frühjahr 1990 von Künstlern aus 21 Ländern mit 106 großformatigen Wandbildern bemalt. Zu den bekanntesten Motiven gehören der die Mauer durchbrechende Trabbi “Test the best” von Birgit Kinder und der Bruderkuss von Honecker und Breshnev “Mein Gott hilf mir, diese tödliche Liebe zu überleben” von dem russische Künstler Dmitrji Vrubel. Im September 1990 wurde das Bilderensemble als East Side Gallery offiziell eröffnet und ist seither ein international bekannter Besuchermagnet. Die ursprüngliche Planung, die Bilder mitsamt der Mauer als Ausstellung durch die ganze Welt zu schicken und anschließend zu versteigern, scheiterte. An seinem ursprünglichen Ort verblieben, steht das Gesamtkunstwerk seit November 1991 unter Denkmalschutz. Die East Side Gallery ist Sinnbild für die Teilung der Stadt geworden. Nirgendwo sonst ist heute noch auf ähnlich eindrucksvolle Weise sinnlich fassbar, welche Dimensionen der “Eiserne Vorhang” hatte, der Stadt und Land teilte. Darüber hinaus sind die Malereien der East-Side-Gallery, die in vielfältiger Form die Sehnsucht nach Frieden und Freiheit thematisieren, ein Ausdruck der Freude über die Überwindung der Funktion dieses Bauwerks.
Die Spree lag hier in ganzer Breite auf Ost-Berliner Territorium und die Sektorengrenze verlief am Kreuzberger Ufer. Im Gegensatz zum üblichen Aufbau der Grenzanlage mit Grenzmauer, Todesstreifen und Hinterlandmauer bestand dieser Grenzabschnitt nur aus Hinterlandmauer und Sicherungszäunen. Die Grenzmauer gen Westen wurden nicht errichtet; die Spree übernahm die Funktion des Grenzstreifens und der Grenzmauer. Die Grenztruppen überwachten mit Patrouillenbooten diesen Abschnitt. Die sich entlang des Friedrichshainer Ufers erstreckende Mauer, die als East Side Gallery bekannt wurde, ist Teil der ehemaligen Hinterlandmauer. Aufgrund der topographischen Lage am Flussufer und der exponierten Lage an der “Protokollstrecke”, die ausländische Staatsgäste auf ihrem Weg vom Flughafen Schönefeld ins Stadtzentrum entlang fuhren, wurde sie mit Elementen vom Typ der “Grenzmauer 75” errichtet.
Unmittelbar nordwestlich der East Side Gallery schließt ein denkmalgeschützter Rest Hinterlandmauer aus den sechziger Jahren an. Diese Hinterlandmauer besteht aus einer vor dem Mauerbau bereits existierenden Ziegelmauer des benachbarten Industriegeländes, die zu Grenzsicherungszwecken mit Hohlblocksteinen aufgemauert wurde. Die direkte Nachbarschaft der groben zusammengesetzten Hinterlandmauer und der in den achtziger Jahren zu Repräsentationszwecken als Hinterlandmauer aufgestellten glatten, einheitlichen “Grenzmauer 75” der East Side Gallery dokumentiert die Bemühung der DDR, die Grenze nach Westen und an öffentlichkeitswirksamen Orten in Ost-Berlin sauber und ordentlich, in gewisser Weise “harmlos” zu präsentieren.
Bereits nach kurzer Zeit benötigten die 1990 entstandenen Malereien der East Side Gallery restauratorische Maßnahmen: Ohne Grundierung und mit wenig haltbaren Farben auf den Beton gemalt, sind sie u.a. von Regen, Schmutz und Sonneneinstrahlung beschädigt, teils übersprüht oder übermalt. Für die Bilder “Vaterland” und “Sieben Stufen der Erleuchtung” und die Mauersegmente auf denen sie sich befinden wurden erfolgreich Muster-Restaurierungen durchgeführt. Das Deutsche Lackinstitut sponserte anlässlich seines 100-jährigen Bestehens gemeinsam mit der Berliner Malerinnung im Sommer 2000 die Auffrischung der Bilder auf einem zirka 300 Meter langen Abschnitt am nordwestlichen Ende der East Side Gallery. Für eine dauerhafte Erhaltung des Denkmals ist die Betonsanierung und anschließende Reproduktion der erhaltenswürdigen Bilder erforderlich. Gelder aus dem Mauerfond sollen in Zukunft die Restaurierungsarbeiten an Mauer und Bildern unterstützen und damit ihren Fortbestand sichern.
Die Planungen sehen die Errichtung eines Uferparks auf der Freifläche zwischen der Spree und der Mauer vor. Die East Side Gallery soll als “künstlerisch transformiertes Mauerdenkmal” in diesen Spreepark integriert werden, wobei sowohl die einstige Hinterlandmauer mit ihrer Sperrwirkung als auch die Bildwerke der East-Side-Gallery erhalten werden sollen."

"North of the Oberbaumbrücke bridge in the Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain district lies the longest section of the Berlin Wall. In the spring of 1990, artists from 21 countries painted 106 large-format murals on the 1.3-kilometer-long section of the Wall along Mühlenstraße. Among the most famous motifs are the Trabbi "Test the best" by Birgit Kinder breaking through the wall and the brother kiss by Honecker and Breshnev "My God help me to survive this deadly love" by the Russian artist Dmitrji Vrubel. In September 1990 the picture ensemble was officially opened as the East Side Gallery and has since become an internationally renowned visitor magnet. The original plan to send the pictures with the wall as an exhibition through the whole world and to auction them afterwards failed. Remained at its original location, the Gesamtkunstwerk has been a listed building since November 1991. The East Side Gallery has become a symbol of the division of the city. Nowhere else is the dimensions of the "Iron Curtain", which divided the city and the countryside, so impressively tangible. In addition, the paintings of the East Side Gallery, which thematize the longing for peace and freedom in various forms, are an expression of joy at overcoming the function of this building.
The Spree lay here in its entire breadth on East Berlin territory and the sector border ran along the Kreuzberg shore. In contrast to the usual construction of the border fortification with border wall, death strip and hinterland wall, this section of the border consisted only of the hinterland wall and safety fences. The border wall to the west was not erected; the Spree took over the function of border strip and border wall. The border troops guarded this section with patrol boats. The wall that stretches along the Friedrichshain bank, known as the East Side Gallery, is part of the former Hinterland wall. Due to its topographical location on the banks of the river and the exposed location along the "Protocol Route", which foreign state visitors drove along on their way from Schoenefeld Airport to the city centre, it was built with elements of the "Border Wall 75" type.
Immediately northwest of the East Side Gallery is a listed remainder of the Hinterland wall from the 1960s. This Hinterland wall consists of a brick wall from the neighbouring industrial site that already existed before the wall was built, which was bricked up with hollow blocks for border security purposes. The direct neighbourhood of the coarse composite Hinterland wall and the smooth, uniform "Grenzmauer 75" of the East Side Gallery, which was erected in the 1980s as a representational Hinterland wall, documents the GDR's efforts to present the border to the west and in public places in East Berlin in a clean and orderly manner, in a sense "harmless".
After only a short time, the East Side Gallery's paintings of 1990 required restoration measures: Painted onto the concrete without a primer and with barely durable paints, they are damaged by rain, dirt and sunlight, among other things, and sometimes sprayed over or painted over. For the paintings "Fatherland" and "Seven Steps of Enlightenment" and the wall segments on which they are located, sample restorations were successfully carried out. In the summer of 2000, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, the Deutsches Lackinstitut and the Berliner Malerinnung sponsored the refreshing of the pictures on a 300-meter-long section at the northwestern end of the East Side Gallery. For a permanent preservation of the monument, the concrete renovation and subsequent reproduction of the pictures worthy of preservation is necessary. Money from the Wall Fund will be used to support the restoration work on the Wall and the pictures in the future and thus ensure their continued existence.
The plans envisage the construction of a riverside park on the open space between the Spree and the Wall. The East Side Gallery is to be integrated into this Spreepark as an "artistically transformed wall monument", whereby both the former hinterland wall with its barrier effect and the visual works of the East Side Gallery are to be preserved."
