Bahntrassenradweg Sülztalbahn - Königsforst, Germany - Rails to Trails on Waymarking.com

Die sogenannte Sülztalbahn war von 1868 bis 1966 eine Bahnstrecke von Köln über Mülheim bis Lindlar. Im Abschnitt zwischen Bensberg und Rösrath durchquerte die Strecke auf etwa 6 Kilometer den Königsforst, ein Waldgebiet östlich von Köln. Von 1889 an gab es auf dem Abschnitt durch den Wald sogar einen Bahnhof: den Bahnhof Forsbach. Seit 1961 fuhr auf dem Abschnitt durch den Königsforst kein Zug mehr, 1964 wurden die Gleise entfernt. Der Bahnhof wurde noch bis in die 1970er Jahre als Wohnhaus genutzt, ist inzwischen aber auch abgerissen.

Zurückgeblieben sind die alten Bahntrassen, die durch den hügeligen Königsforst gegraben worden sind. Das Waldgebiet wird inzwischen von vielen - insbesondere aus dem nahgelegenen Köln - als Naherholungsgebiet zum Wandern und Radfahren genutzt. So lag es nahe, die Bahntrassen zu einem Wander- und Radweg umzubauen. Auch wenn keine Gleisanlagen mehr vorhanden sind, kann man stellenweise deutlich erkennen, dass es sich um eine ehemalige Bahnstrecke handelt. Am ehemaligen Bahnhof Forsbach kann man noch Reste der Bahnsteige erkennen, eine Bronzeplakette wurde zur Erinnerung an einem Felsen angebracht.

The so-called Sülztalbahn was from 1868 to 1966 a railway line from Cologne via Mülheim to Lindlar. In the section between Bensberg and Rösrath, the route crossed the Königsforst, a forest area east of Cologne, for about 6 kilometers. From 1889 there was even a railway station on the section through the forest: the Forsbach station. Since 1961 no more trains did drive on the section through the Königsforst anymore, the tracks were removed in 1964. The station was still used as a residential building until the 1970s, but has also been demolished meanwhile.

Remaining are the old railway trails that have been dug through the hilly Königsforst. The forest area is now used by many - especially from nearby Cologne - as a recreational area for hiking and cycling. So it was obvious to rebuild the railway trail to a hiking and cycling path. Even if there are no more railway tracks, you can clearly see at some places that this is a former railway line. At the former Forsbach station you can still see remains of the platforms, a commemorative bronze plaque was attached to a rock.
