The larger than life statue showing St. Francis of Assisi wearing a friar's robe, with a human skull at his feet, originally adorned the St.Franciscus (St. Francis of Assisi) convent of the Sisters of Roosendaal. This building, called the Sentro di Salu Convent, now houses the management and administrative offices of Fundashon Mariadal along with their home care facilities. This foundation also operates a nursing home, a hospital and provides other medical services. The organization employs over 500 people. (visit link)

The foundation dates from the year 1922, when the sisters of Roosendaal bought a villa with surrounding grounds to realize a hospital. This hospital was quickly put into use and was given the name 'San Francisco Hospital'. Almost in the same year the nuns built a monastery on the surrounding plot of land. (visit link)

Saint Francis of Assisi (1181/1182 – 3 October 1226), was an Italian Catholic friar, deacon and preacher. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of Saint Clare, the Third Order of Saint Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history. Saint Francis is usually represented surrounded by birds but also, more rarely, with a human skull. (visit link)
