Victory Column Guest Book Stairs to the top

The Victory Column is one of Berlin's most famous symbols and one of the city's most popular tourist attraction. Over 60,000 cars drive through the roundabout every day and thousands of visitors climb to the top of the 67 meters (220 feet) high column at every open day.

The monument commemorates Prussia's and Germany's victories in three wars. Between 1864 and 1871, the Danish-Prussian War (1864), the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and the Franco-German War of 1870/71 laid the foundation for Germany's unity. At the time, the country that was to become Germany was divided into 26 different independent kingdoms and principalities. As a result of alliances forged in the three wars, all states came together to form the German Empire in 1871.

In 1945, after two devastating lost wars, Germany was divided once again. The column was one of the few West-Berlin monuments that were visible across the Wall in East Berlin and in the first seven days after the fall of the Berlin Wall an estimated 10,000 East-Germans paid tribute to a symbol of German unity.

During our visit in 2016, we visited Goldelse (German for "Golden Lizzie"), so named because of the golden statue of Roman victory goddess Victoria on top of the column and - of course - signed the guest book.

The guest book is located at the bottom of the column. The monument is open for visitors daily from 9am to 6pm. Access to the bottom level, including the guest book is free, but if you want to climb to the top, you'll have to pay three Euros (it is absolutely worth it!)

View from the top. In the back the Brandenburg Gate and the TV Tower.
