The "Mormons" had been persecuted and driven from place to place until they were finally driven out of Nauvoo, Illinois. Brigham Young was the leader that led them out of Illinois to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. He established Salt Lake City and became the first governor of the Utah Territory. He was also the President and Prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
