During the flooding of the Meuse in 1993, large parts of Dutch Limburg flooded.
In the basin of the Meuse, high water levels of the Meuse came after a period of persistent rain. On the 20th of December, the Meuse for the first time stepped outside its shore and on 22 December this happened at several locations in the province of Limburg. The surroundings of Roermond and Venlo, and specifically the villages of Gennep, Itteren and Borgharen, [1] were hit hard. About 8% (18,000 ha) of the area of ??the province of Limburg was under water. Some Brabant municipalities on the Maas also experienced flooding. Approximately 12,000 people were evacuated. The total damage amounted to 254 million guilders. [2] [3]
Never before has such a high discharge been measured: 3120 m3 / sec. In Borgharen the Maas reaches a record height of 45.90 meters above NAP. In January 1995, the areas along the Meuse were once again affected by large-scale floods.
