On October 14, 1806, Napoleon's Army beat Prussia in the Battle of Jena-Auerstedt. Ten days later, Napoleon takes Berlin. Part of the surrender of the Prussian capital was the surrender of the Spandau Citadel.

At the time, the fortress was in very wretched shape. After his inspection, Napoleon ordered a heavier fortification, including a battery of heavy mortars.

Manufacturer's stamps at the foundations tell us, that the two mortars on display were the 21st and 22nd made in 1812 by the royal foundry of Liege.

After Napoleon's retreat from Russia, the French and Polish troops in Spandau were not able to hold the Citadel. On April 27, 1813, after a long siege, the French surrendered to Prussian General August von Thümen and left the fortress, leaving behind 115 canons and mortars, 6,385 guns and pistols and 55,000 pounds of gunpowder and ammunition.
