A Blegny, l'exploitation de la houille commence dès le XVe siècle, sous l'impulsion des moines de l'Abbaye du Val-Dieu, propriétaires de terrains houillers.

En 1887 la société qui exploite le site sera mise en liquidation et le site sera abandonné pendant 30 ans. En 1919 les activités reprennent et c'est en 1920 que le puits n°1 , qui est le second (le premier est le Puits Marie) sera creusé sur le site. C'est le plus profond des deux et va jusqu'à 520 m de profondeur. Le charbonnage prospère alors jusqu'en 1931, année où sont extraites 84 000 tonnes de charbon (contre 10 000 tonnes avant la première fermeture).
En 1940, survient la deuxième guerre mondiale, qui entraîne la destruction de la tour du Puits n°1 et du lavoir. Il seront reconstruit par la suite. L'exploitation sera définitivement arrêté le 31 mars 1980.

Depuis de nombreuses années, Blegny-Mine est la reconversion réussie du charbonnage d’Argenteau-Trembleur en site de tourisme et de patrimoine industriel.
