Until 1971 when the Cape Tourville Lighthouse was completed, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority had struggled to maintain the inaccessible Cape Forestier Lighthouse on Lemon Rock.
Thanks to use of modern technology, the Cape Tourville Lighthouse was never manned, being constructed with automatic 160,000 cd, 1000 Watt Tungsten Halogen lights. It sits 126 metres above sea level and has a height of 11 metres.
The lighthouse is in the Freycinet National Park. Access is via Coles Bay then about 10 kilometres by steep unsealed roads. A park entry pass is required, but well worth it.
