A pair of recumbent tigers, each 8.5' long. rest on a 3' high by x 2.25' wide by 8.5' long stone block base that flank the steps to the main entrance to Nassau Hall. 28 1/2 x 102 in. The tigers were sculpted by Phimister A. Proctor and carry the inscription PRESENTED BY THE CLASS OF 1879, on their plinths. According to the Smithsonian Art Inventory Catalog:
"The sculptures were a gift from the class of 1879 and were dedicated at commencement ceremonies in 1909. The class of 1879 had originally installed a pair of lions in the same location, but replaced them with the tigers in 1909, in keeping with the mascot of the university."
