In Island Park is a statue of a soldier with a rifle. The north side of the memorial has a Grand Army of the Republic emblem with IN MEMORY OF OUR COMRADES on the plinth. The south side has a carving of The United Spanish War Veterans Medal, a Maltese Cross with CUBA, PORTO RICO, PHILIPPINE ISLANDS AND U.S.A. on the arms of the cross. In the center is written

SPANISH WAR
VETERANS
1898-1902

Fighting started in Cuba in 1898 and was finish in 1899, but fighting went on in the Philippines until 1902.

"While other Fargoans would see service alongside men from throughout the region and the nation in the U.S. Navy, the volunteer cavalry (some of them serving under Teddy Roosevelt), and both state and regular army units, Company B of the First North Dakota Volunteer Infantry was unique in being made up exclusively of Fargo men."
The First North Dakota left Fargo in May of 1898, served in Cuba and then in the Philippines. The First North Dakota arrived in San Francisco in September of 1899, where the unit was decommissioned. Which meant the Army would not provide transportation home. Every town that sent a unit to war had fund raisers and train tickets to North Dakota were provided by hometowns.
