Lake Hefner was built in 1947. Covering 2500 acres with an average depth of 30', it supplies water to north and west Oklahoma City. A large water treatment plant was constructed at the same time on the north end of the lake. This plant has a capacity of 100 million gallons per day, and includes 20 million gallons of underground storage. The lake, which is surrounded by parks and trails and also hosts a golf course and several marinas, is also a popular recreational area.
