The Pan-American Exposition was held in Buffalo in 1901. President McKinley was to have opened the expo, but his wife was sick so Vice-President Roosevelt went in his place. McKinley did attend later that year and was honored at a reception on President's Day, September 5. That night as the crowd of people passed through to shake McKinley's hand, Leon Czolgosz shot him in the stomach.

Roosevelt had been on a trip in Vermont at the time. He was immediately summoned to Buffalo to carry on the affairs of the government. He stayed in the Ansley Wilcox mansion while in Buffalo. After McKinley's health seemed to improve, Roosevelt left to go on a vacation in the Adirondacks. On September 12 while hiking on Mt. Marcy, he learned of McKinley's worsening condition and headed back to Buffalo.

While on the train back, he was told that McKinley had died. Once in Buffalo, he went to the Wilcox Mansion, then to the Milburn House where McKinley died to pay his respects. He then returned to the Wilcox Mansion and it was suggested he take the oath of office immediately. So on September 14, 1901 in this house, Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in as the 26th president of the United States.
