Le donjon primitif remonte à la fin du 12e siècle ou au tout début du 13e siècle. Le château proprement dit remonte au 13e siècle.
Vers 1536, Antoine de Glimes, comte de Walhain et marquis de Berghes, entame de grands travaux de restauration et d'agrandissement du château, lesquels seront poursuivis après son décès en 1541 par son épouse Jacqueline de Croÿ, puis par ses successeurs et ce jusqu'en 1569.
Abandonné au début du 18e siècle, le château fut victime d'une forte tempête entre 1792 et 1804 et ne cessa de se détériorer jusqu'à nos jours.

The original keep dates back to the end of the 12th century or the very beginning of the 13th century. The castle itself dates back to the 13th century.
Around 1536, Antoine de Glimes, Count of Walhain and Marquis of Berghes, began major restoration and extension work on the castle, which continued after his death in 1541 by his wife Jacqueline de Croÿ, then by his successors until 1569.
Abandoned at the beginning of the 18th century, the castle was the victim of a strong storm between 1792 and 1804 and has continued to deteriorate until now.
