Die Bühnenkonstruktionen zu Richard Wagners „Fliegendem Holländer“ mit dem hohen Turm (1989/90) oder zu Giacomo Puccinis „Tosca“ mit dem riesigen Auge (2007/08) wurden dabei neben anderen mitunter zu einer ernstzunehmenden Konkurrenz für das offizielle Wahrzeichen der Stadt: den frühbarocken Martinsturm in der Oberstadt, der immerhin die größte Zwiebelkuppel Mitteleuropas besitzt.
Superlative finden sich auch bei den Bregenzer Festspielen auf Schritt und Tritt. Das beginnt bei der weltweit einzigartigen Größe der Seebühne mit ihren rund 7.000 Sitzplätzen und hört bei den immer neuen rekordverdächtigen Zahlen bei der Bühnentechnik noch lange nicht auf. 185.000 Karten warten in diesem Sommer auf Besucher, davon allein 162.000 für das Spiel auf dem See. Die Reihe ließe sich fortsetzen. Aber es geht in Bregenz bei weitem nicht nur um ein spektakuläres Freilufterlebnis, wobei selbstverständlich auch dieses höchsten künstlerischen Ansprüchen folgt."
