Brigadier General Morgan became one of the most legendary Confederate commanders. Known as the “Thunderbolt of the Confederacy”, he became famous for his raiding parties that disrupted Union supply and communication lines. While on a raid into southern Indiana and Ohio, Morgan was captured and sent to the Ohio Penitentiary, where he escaped. In a surprise attack by Federal cavalry at Greeneville, Tennessee, he was shot and killed on Sept. 3, 1864. General Morgan was buried in Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky.
He was Born June 1, 1825.
