Completion of the church took place in 1877 and it remained a Wesleyan Methodist Church until 1884 when several branches of the Methodist faith merged to form the Methodist Church in Canada. Forty One years later, in 1925, with Church Union in Canada, it joined the United Church and remained so until around 2006 when it was closed due to a lack of attendees.

In that year it was sold to an Ontario couple and had been allowed to deteriorate for a period. It appears that no maintenance has been done to the building since its closure, as there are shingles missing and the paint is peeling, giving it the look of an abandoned and forgotten building. This is a shame, as it is actually a nice looking building which received quite a bit of attention to detail during its construction.

For just $139,900 (or less) one may have purchased this piece of history, as it was advertised for sale a few years ago. In December 2016, though, it was purchased and turned into a Wedding chapel, the Grand Victorian. The grand opening took place on Saturday, June 24. The story of its purchase and conversion follows.

Built in 1877, the former United Church was a mess when a couple purchased it in December 2016. But they say they knew the property had the bones of something special.

Marly and Greg Anderson from Charlottetown, decided to buy the historic church and transform it into a business after their own wedding experience.

Renovations included turning the balcony into a wedding suite for the wedding party to get ready. There’s a full bathroom and bedroom decorated with impressive chandelier fixtures hanging from a high wooden-beam ceiling and antique furniture and décor.

The basement has been converted into an area for the groomsmen with a pool table, a poker table, TV bedroom, kitchen and bathrooms.

There are two separate entrances, front and back, so the bride and groom can enter separately.

Guests can expect a fully licensed bar and a newly built deck that overlooks a peaceful garden. And the venue is wheelchair accessible.

Four weddings have already been booked this summer.
