Unfortunately I didn't measure the diameter/calibre of this mortar as I was photographing it, but it does seem to be a Stokes, '3 Inch', 81 mm, British-made mortar, that was used in the latter half of World War One, and in World War Two.

It is a muzzle-loaded, smooth bore mortar, with a set of legs/bi-pod mount, to the front. It was designed for a high angle of fire. Distance of the projectile is determined by the angle of the tube, and by the amount of the initial propellant charge, and any additional 'rings' (up to four) that were added.

By World War Two it (and the mortar bombs) had had been modified to fire as many as 30 rounds per minute, with a range of 2,300 metres - up from 23 rounds per minutes, and a maximum range of 800 metres in World War One.
