Gundam’s upgrade was unveiled in Tokyo’s Odaiba waterfront district on Sunday September 24, 2017, giving hope to its corporate sponsors that the giant robot statue will become a new tourist attraction ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

If you have been to Odaiba before, you would have seen the classic RX-78-2 Gundam statue – arguably the former centerpiece of the man-made island – and probably had a photo taken with it. It was removed in the spring of 2017 and in September 2017, the Unicorn—1.7 meters taller—was unveiled in its place.

What’s new about the Unicorn is that unlike its predecessor, it can switch between two modes – Unicorn and Destroyer – and you can catch the change a number of times each day. The Unicorn mode sees the Gundam with a single horn on its head, while the Destroyer mode reveals the statue’s hidden light panels.

The transformation happens at 11am, 1pm, 3pm, and 5pm. The armour plates shift during the change and this happens in around 10 seconds, so prepare your cameras for the moment.

The visual display continues into the night as after the sun sets, the statue lights up, with the Destroyer mode’s panels glowing like beacons in the night.
