Appelée aussi tour des Waroux, le donjon d'Amay, maison forte des avoués de la localité, fut sans doute érigée au 12e siècle pendant la campagne de consolidation et de construction de places fortes destinée à protéger la principauté de Liège sous Henri de Leez (1145-1164). Construite à l'origine à l'écart des habitations et du centre ancien de la collégiale, elle dominait la plaine alluviale proche de la Meuse. Elle mesurait en hauteur 15,60 mètres. Son appareil est en pierre régionale : grès houiller et calcaire.
Point de départ de marches adeps, les caves de la tour abritent un estaminet où l'on peut boire un verre. Le rez-de-chaussée sert de centre au Syndicat d'Initiative d'Amay. Vous y trouverez des folders touristiques et des renseignements pratiques sur la région Hesbaye-Meuse et sur Amay. Les quatre étages sont visitables, Le "grenier aux souvenirs" situé dans les deux derniers vous emmène vers d'autres aspects de l'histoire de la localité. Il y a aussi une dynamo sortie des ateliers de Zénobe Gramme, né à Jehay et inventeur de la dynamo industrielle.
Ook bekend als de Waroux Tower, de kerker van Amay, het versterkte huis van de plaatselijke raadsheren, werd waarschijnlijk gebouwd in de 12de eeuw tijdens de campagne van consolidatie en de bouw van forten om het prinsdom Luik te beschermen onder Henri de Leez (1145-1164). Oorspronkelijk gebouwd buiten de huizen en het oude centrum van de collegiale kerk, domineerde het de alluviale vlakte van de Maas. Het was 15,60 meter hoog. Het gebouw is gemaakt van regionale steen: steenkoolzandsteen en kalksteen.
De kelders van de toren zijn een startpunt voor wandelingen, de kelders van de toren herbergen een estaminet waar u een drankje kunt nuttigen. Also known as the Waroux Tower, the dungeon of Amay, the fortified house of the local attorneys, was probably built in the 12th century during the campaign of consolidation and construction of fortresses to protect the principality of Liège under Henri de Leez (1145-1164). Originally built away from the houses and the old centre of the collegiate church, it dominated the alluvial plain near the Meuse. It was 15.60 metres high. Its apparatus is made of regional stone: coal sandstone and limestone.
A starting point for adeps walks, the tower's cellars house an estaminet where you can have a drink. The ground floor serves as a centre for the Syndicat d'Initiative d'Amay.
