"A 12-pounder cannon is a 12-pounder shotgun, used from the 17th century to the mid-19th century.

The 12-pounder is one of the calibers (expressed from the weight of the ball) used at sea on European warships, but also as field artillery or siege artillery. If on sea it is a rather modest caliber (in comparison with the guns of 36 or 24 pounds for example), on ground it is qualified of heavy artillery. One could shoot about one ball every 5 minutes.

The dimensions of a 12-pounder can vary according to nationality and time. The following measures are those of the 12-pound guns of the French Navy according to the regulation of 1786, cast iron.

Mass of the barrel: 1470 kilograms, Mass of the lookout: 275 kilograms, Length of the tube: 2,430 meters, Diameter of the soul: 120,7 millimeters, Mass of the ball of 12: 5,8 kilograms. "
