The Olde Allegheny Garden is one of many sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the area's largest private land trust. The WPC uses block grant money to help out projects from vegetable gardens to flowerbeds on traffic islands. The WPC supplies fencing, tools, watering cans, hoses, etc. Local residents supply the labor.

This particular garden first sprouted up in 1982. There are 30 to 50 plots in the garden (depending on whether folks sign up for half-plots or full-plots). The annual cost of a plot is $30.00, and the average plot size is 10 x 20 feet. Gardeners are free to plant whatever they wish.

A recent campaign for new gardeners produced a rather innovative advertising flyer. Taped up on power poles and street lamps around the area was the following broadside:

"WANTED: Seasonal relationship with someone who doesn't mind a history with a little dirt."

Sounds like a bunch of neighborhood folk having a lot of fun and spending time together in their garden. And that sort of thing is key to taking back a chunk of city and transforming it into an old-style neighborhood.
