The Town:

La Tène is a municipality in the canton of Neuchâtel with a population of about 5000. It is located at the northern end of Lake Neuchâtel and borders the canton of Bern.

La Tène was founded in 2009 as a merger of the two towns Marin-Epagnier and Thielle-Wavre. Both of them were also results of mergers dating back to 1888, before there were the four villages Marin, Epagnier, Thielle and Wavre.

The municipality is geographically divided into three distinct villages, separated by agricultural area. Thielle and Wavre in the north are still agricultural villages, but with a growing number of commuting residents. Marin-Epagnier in the south at the shore of the lake is an idustrial city - mainly watch manufacturing and logistics - with many people commuting in, it is the third largest economic place in the canton.

The four original villages were founded in the Middle Ages and were first documented in the 12th century. But the history of human settlements in the area dates back many centuries more. When the water level of the lake was lowered as a land improvement measure in the 1850s, in the swamp lands La Tène east of Marin a large archeological site was discovered: remains of bridges and buildings and thousands of artifacts, ceramics, iron tools and weapons like hundreds of swords. The place became the namesake of the La Tène culture, a Celtic era that covered large parts of Europe from Romania to Ireland from the 5th century BC until the Roman conquests at the end of the 1st century BC. No wonder, the new municipality chose that famous name after the merger in 2009.

The Town Hall:

The town hall is a four story building at the main street in Marin-Epagnier. It has a decent historicist style, looking slightly Neo-Gothic, but without pretending to be that old. The ground floor is made of cut stone, over the arched entrance it is dated 1959 and has the emblem of Marin-Epagnier as a relief. So it most probably was the town hall of the town part even before the merger.

La Tène est une commune du canton de Neuchâtel d'environ 5 000 habitants. Elle est située à l'extrémité nord du lac de Neuchâtel et borde le canton de Berne.

La Tène a été fondée en 2009 par la fusion des deux villes Marin-Epagnier et Thielle-Wavre. Tous deux sont également le résultat de fusions datant de 1888, avant les quatre villages étaient Marin, Epagnier, Thielle et Wavre.

La municipalité est divisée géographiquement en trois villages distincts, séparés par une zone agricole. Thielle et Wavre dans le nord sont encore des villages agricoles, mais avec un nombre croissant de navetteurs. Marin-Epagnier au sud au bord du lac est une ville industrielle - principalement horlogère et logistique - avec de nombreuses personnes qui se déplacent, c'est la troisième place économique du canton.

Les quatre villages d'origine ont été fondés au Moyen Âge et ont été documentés pour la première fois au 12ème siècle. Pas étonnant, la nouvelle municipalité a choisi ce nom célèbre après la fusion en 2009.

L'hôtel de ville:

La mairie est un bâtiment de quatre étages situé dans la rue principale de Marin-Epagnier. Il a un style historiciste décent, légèrement néo-gothique, mais sans prétendre être aussi vieux. Le rez-de-chaussée est en pierre de taille, au-dessus de l'entrée voûtée datant de 1959 et porte l'emblème de Marin-Epagnier en relief. C'était probablement la mairie de cette partie de la ville avant la fusion.
