The Brumov castle was guarded from the Moravian side by the Vlára Pass through which there led a merchant road from Moravia to Hungary. Archaeological research, once the biggest in Czechoslovakia, was started in 1977. There were found several corridors and foundations of the kitchen, remains of the drawbridge pillars, original stone pavement, and the main tower from the half of the 13 century. This place was already inhabited in the 1st century BC. In the first half of the 13th century, there was built a stone castle under the rule of margrave Vladislav Jindrich. At that time it represented an important stronghold of king Premysl Otakar II in the fight against the Hungarian people. The castle underwent a big change in the 15th century when it came to the construction of a huge fortified system. At the time of Hussite wars in the 1st half of the 15th century, the castle became the centre of the Hussitism in the eastern Moravia. There were raging fights in the presence of king Zikmund, but the castle was probably not conquered. In 1426, the castle was in the possession of king Zikmund, and raids on Hungary were carried out from here. At the end of the 15th century, Moravia became a witness of another war conflict between Czech King George of Podebrady and Hungarian King Matyáš Korvín. In the years 1468-1469, the castle was conquered, and the Korvín´s followers Podmanictí from Podmanín obtained it. In the 1st half of the 16th century there comes to the radical reconstruction of the entire castle which is changed into a comfortable mansion, and it becomes a stronghold which successfully resists all attacks. At that time there was built a bottom castle with a moat and a pillar stone bridge. In 1663, the Tartarian and Turkish armies got into Moravia. During defence there dropped down dead a big number of Wallachians and the entire eastern Moravia was considerably devastated. The town of Brumov was completely damaged, only the castle withstood it. As Turkish military campaigns were repeated, the castle became on the orders of the Emperor the main centre of defence of the eastern-Moravian border. In 1760, the castle burnt down. Today, due to the research we can see vaulting of the upper castle from the 1st half of the 16th century in good condition in the castle. Older parts of the castle from the 14th century have been also preserved.
