[DE] Im Dachgiebel des Hotels Elephant in Brixen befindet sich ein Relief mit der Abbildung des Elefanten Soliman. Abgebildet ist der Elefant Soliman stehend auf Sanddünen in der Wüste mit einer Palme an jeder Seite.
"Der Elefant Soliman (* ca. 1540 in Indien; † 18. Dezember 1553 in Wien) war ein Geschenk Johannas, der Tochter Kaiser Karls V. und Isabellas von Portugal, an Maximilian, den Neffen des Kaisers und späteren Kaiser Maximilian II., und der erste Elefant in Wien. Er hinterließ die stattlichste Anzahl von Spuren aller Elefantengeschenke in Europa.
Der kaiserliche Elefantenzug folgte von Trient aus der Route über den Brenner. Man hatte gehofft, in Bozen die Tiroler durch ein ähnliches Spektakel beeindrucken zu können wie in Trient die Geistlichkeit, was allerdings offenbar misslang. Die hier bei der Gelegenheit angesetzten diplomatischen Verhandlungen gestalteten sich derart schleppend, dass es als ratsam erachtet wurde, den Elefanten nach Brixen voraus zu schicken, wo er am 2. Januar 1552 eintraf und vierzehn Tage rasten konnte, bis seine Herrschaft nachrückte und man sich auf den Weg durchs Eisacktal und über den Brenner machen konnte. Zum Gedenken an diesen Aufenthalt benannte Solimans Wirt in Brixen seinen Gasthof um in die Herberge zum „Hellephant“, die bis auf den heutigen Tag als „Elephant“ existiert und in einem Wandbild und einer über die Jahrhunderte stets erneuerten Inschrift an Soliman erinnert. 80 Jahre später, als der erste Jahrmarktselefant durch Europa tourte, folgte ein Gastwirt in Graz diesem Beispiel."
[EN] In the gable of the Elephant Hotel in Brixen there is a relief depicting the Elephant Soliman. The picture shows the elephant Soliman standing on sand dunes in the desert with a palm tree on each side.
"The elephant Soliman (* ca. 1540 in India; † 18 December 1553 in Vienna) was a gift of Joana, daughter of Emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal, to Maximilian, nephew of the Emperor and later Emperor Maximilian II, and the first elephant in Vienna. He left the most impressive number of traces of all elephant gifts in Europe.
The imperial elephant train followed the Brenner route from Trento. They had hoped to impress the Tyroleans in Bolzano with a spectacle similar to that of the clergy in Trento, which apparently failed. The diplomatic negotiations that took place here were so slow that it was considered advisable to send the elephants ahead to Bressanone/Brixen, where they arrived on 2 January 1552 and rested for a fortnight until their rule came to pass through the Isarco Valley and over the Brenner Pass. To commemorate this stay, Solimans inn in Bressanone/Brixen renamed his inn "Hellephant", which still exists today as an "elephant" and reminds us of Soliman in a mural and an inscription that has been constantly renewed over the centuries. 80 years later, when the first fair elephant toured Europe, an innkeeper in Graz followed suit."
