The ladder is made out of 20mm external ropes with a 12mm silver rope weaved through. Tall wooden poles suspend the ladder across the highway & are connected to surrounding trees by thick nylon rope. The location where one can view this ladder is off Tindall's Lane & then take a right hand turn into Gisbons Lane which is a dead end. The trees beside the pole are interconnected by the same nylon rope & a very long rope connects the pole to a tree some 30 metres away in a stand of bushland. The cleared patch between the bushland & the laneway was once the old two lane Princes Highway.

There is no fence leading to the pole as this would be an obstruction. The animals, both nocturnal, gain access via the ropes & trees.

There is another such ladder about a kilometre to the north but it is on private property. You can see both ladders from the point where Tindalls Lane joins the highway which gives a full appreciation of their length.

A company, Fauna Crossings, constructed the various ladders along the highway. Their website is listed below.

In addition to the ladder there is another fauna crossing about 20 metres away but it is a tunnel. It would allow larger animals such as wallabies & wombats to cross safely (and probably snakes). It also can accommodate gliders & possums which can walk along interconnected poles which run the full length of the tunnel & are about 1.5 metres above the surface. This tunnel has resting poles at either end.
