Benzin und Öl wurden zunächst aus der Kanne oder in Kanistern verkauft. Unterirdische Lagertanks mit Pumpen gab es in den USA etwa ab 1900, in Deutschland ab 1923.
Einige der erstenTanksäulen in Deutschland hatten Handpumpen nach dem französischen System „Satam': Sie enthielten zwei anstelle von einem Messglas. Somit konnte während des Befüllens des einen 5-Liter-Glases der Inhalt des anderen in den Tank gelassen werden. In Deutschland wurden diese Pumpe in Lizenz gebaut.
Obwohl ersteTanksäulen mit elektrischer Pumpe schon 1928 auftauchten, blieb in Deutschland die Handpumpe noch lange verbreitet, wie die beiden Exponat daneben zeigen.
1950 wurden in Deutschland erstmalig Tanksäulen aufgestellt, die nicht nur die abgegebene Kraftstoff-menge, sondern auch den Preis anzeigten.

Gasoline and oil were first sold out of jugs or in canisters. Underground storage tanks with pumps were available in the USA from about 1900, in Germany from 1923.
Some of the first petrol pumps in Germany had hand pumps according to the French system "Satam": they contained two instead of one measuring glass. Thus, while filling one 5-liter glass, the contents of the other could be left in the tank. In Germany, these pumps were built under license.
Although first petrol pumps with an electric pump appeared as early as 1928, the hand pump remained in use in Germany for a long time, as the two exhibits next to it show.
In 1950, petrol pumps were installed in Germany for the first time, indicating not only the quantity of fuel delivered but also the price.
