The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V Z6672 ZA-Y of the 10 Squadron was shot down here on 19 August 1941. The Whitley was on his way to Köln but was hit by a night fighter, the damaged aircraft still managed to unload his bombs at Aachen, DE. After this bombing and during the return to England, the aircraft was hit a second time, this time by Oblt Heinrich Griese of the 1./NJG 1. This attack made the Whitley fatal.

The monument is on the Tiendenberg and was inaugurated on August 19, 1999 by W / O Norman WEISER of the 10 Squadron. Bagpipe player Raymond BROUNS led the way to the ceremony and F-16 of Kleine Brogel flew over the monument. The proposal to set up the monument came from the South Limburg WW II commemoration committee. Jacky COMHAIR came up with the idea to place the RAF-cocarde on the monument. Sgt. Steve ROBERTS (RAF) and members of the committee built the brick monument at the very nice location. The commemorative plates were donated by air force personnel from Glons and Paul DAEMEN provided the land. In May 2002 Paul, Timmy and Dominique DAEMEN made a concrete edge on the monument so that it was better protected
