The aqueduct in Tongeren is the largest earthen relic from the Roman period that is still preserved in Flanders - probably even from all periods in Flanders. In addition, this structure probably represents the best-preserved copy of a construction method that is typical of Northwest Europe

The most striking part of the Roman aqueduct, known as the Beukenberg, was partially protected as a landscape in 1945. Another substantial part (about two thirds) of the known and still preserved route is also not within the scope of this protection, and extends from the Hoogveld in the south to the stone road Tongeren - Sint-Truiden in the north. The entire route was included in the delimitation of archaeological protection.
