Located mere blocks from the Ohio river, this tree no doubt once pointed the way to some important land feature. An area of high ground (safe from flooding) is located in the general direction of the elbow bend, perhaps this marker pointed to a seasonal hunting camp.

The area that is now Louisville metro was not well settled by Native Americans according to the oral hitories of the area natives, but it was a popular hunting and fishing area for the Shawnee and the Cherokee.

The tree is located on the Spalding University campus in Louisville, KY. The oldest Catholic college west of the Alleghenies, Spaulding was established in 1814 and named after Catherine Spalding, founder of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. In 1920 and Louisville campus was established; the administrative building is housed in the historic Tompkins-Buchanan-Rankin mansion.
