EN: While the castle dates back to the 13th century, this wing was rebuilt in Renaissance style in the late 16th century. It was the residence of the bailiffs of Berne until 1798. Then it became municipal property. The third and forth floor was used as district jail until 1964. I could not find any date when it opened, maybe when the town took over the property, but maybe it was even used before under Bernese rule.
In 1977, a group of local artists founded the Association of the galerie du Château d’Avenches. The rooms were a compensation for a private gallery that had to close.
Since 1977, the gallery organized about five or six art exhibitions each year, usually lasting for about a month. Each one dedicated to a contemporary local artist. The exhibitions are open from Wednesday to Sunday 14:00 - 18:00. Entrance is free.
FR: Alors que le château remonte au 13ème siècle, cette aile a été reconstruite dans le style de la Renaissance à la fin du 16ème siècle. Il fut la résidence des baillis de Berne jusqu'en 1798. Puis il devint propriété municipale. Le troisième et quatrième étage servait de prison de district jusqu'en 1964. Je n'ai pas pu trouver de date d'ouverture, peut-être quand la ville a pris possession de la propriété, mais peut-être elle était déjà utilisée sous la domination bernoise.
En 1977, un groupe d'artistes locaux a fondé l'Association de la galerie du Château d'Avenches. Les chambres étaient une compensation pour une galerie privée qui devait fermer.
Depuis 1977, la galerie organise environ cinq ou six expositions d'art chaque année, habituellement pendant environ un mois. Chacun dédié à un artiste local contemporain. Les expositions sont ouvertes du mercredi au dimanche de 14h00 à 18h00. L'entrée est gratuite.
