The history and meaning of the flag is unclear. The oldest know documentation dates back to 1270, but the oldest versions of the emblem do not clearly show a moors head.

There are at least four theories. Some say it is the Roman Emperor Vespasian, who probably spent some years in town (then called Aventicum) in his youth. It could be a bishop, the last bishop of Avenches, Marius who moved the residence to Lausanne in the early sixth century. Another possibility is a barbar chief of the 8th century. But none of them was of African origin. Maybe it is somehow connected to the Saracen invasion in the 9th century.

I found this flag over the tourist information center at the main square in the town center.
