"It is the oldest Cistercian abbey preserved, characterized by its stripping in ornamentation.It is classified as a historical monument since 1862, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
Abbey Fontenay, which was founded in 1118 by the followers of St. Bernard, was the second daughter of Clairvaux. The abbey finds its final location in 1130, lower in the wooded valley, said valley of Egrevies.
A first church, a cloister and a dormitory were built around 1132. The abbey developed during the following years and it was in 1139 that the construction of the current abbey, which was consecrated in 1147 by Pope Eugene III, began. . The monastery was completed in the late 12th century and has been titled Royal Abbey since 1269. Fontenay flourished during the 12th and 13th centuries: at the height of its fame, three hundred people lodged in its buildings.
The following centuries are difficult for the abbey, which was plundered in the middle of the 14th century by the English, then in the middle of the 15th century, and then ransacked around 1557 during the Wars of Religion. Although restorations were carried out in the 14th century, the decline of the abbey began in the 16th century with the establishment of the Commende regime in 1547. In 1745, the porch of the abbey, the kitchens and the refectory of the monks are demolished.
After the French Revolution the abbey is secularized, sold as national property in 1791 and transformed into paper mill by Claude Hugot. The Montgolfier brothers bought the abbey around 1820 and began the construction of several industrial buildings. After the Historic Monument classification of 1862, the abbey must wait until 1906 to be restored.

L’abbaye de Fontenay, qui fut fondée en 1118 par les disciples de Saint-Bernard, était la deuxième fille de Clairvaux. L’abbaye trouve son emplacement définitif en 1130, plus bas dans la vallée boisée, dit vallon des Egrevies.
Une première église, un cloître et un dortoir furent construits vers 1132. L’abbaye se développe pendant les années suivantes et c’est en 1139 que fut commencée la construction de l’abbatiale actuelle, qui fut consacrée en 1147 par le Pape Eugène III. Le monastère est complété à la fin du 12e siècle et porte le titre d’Abbaye Royale depuis 1269. Fontenay va prospérer pendant les 12e et 13e siècles : au plus haut de sa renommée, trois cents personnes logeaient dans ses bâtiments.
Les siècles qui suivent sont difficiles pour l’abbaye, qui fut pillée au milieu du 14e siècle par les Anglais, ensuite au milieu du 15e siècle, et puis saccagée vers 1557 pendant les Guerres de Religion. Bien que des restaurations aient été effectuées au 14e siècle, le déclin de l’abbaye commence au 16e siècle avec l'établissement du régime de la Commende en 1547. En 1745, le porche de l'abbatiale, les cuisines et le réfectoire des moines sont démolis.
Après la Révolution française l’abbaye est sécularisée, vendue comme bien national en 1791 et transformée en papeterie par Claude Hugot. Les frères Montgolfier achètent l’abbaye vers 1820 et commencent la construction de plusieurs bâtiments industriels. Après le classement Monument Historique de 1862, l’abbaye doit attendre jusqu’à 1906 pour être restaurée.
