An information board at the entrance has the following information.
On 24th August 1846 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert paid a surprise visit to Guernsey. It was the first by a reigning monarch and was of great importance to islanders.

An inscribed granite stone was laid marking the spot where Queen Victoria had stepped ashore at St Peter Port harbour and a tower, subsequently named Victoria Tower, was commissioned to commemorate the visit. The Tower, designed by William Coiling, cost £2,000 which was funded by public subscription. The start of the project was heralded by a magnificent public ceremony on 27th May 1848 at which the Governor of Guernsey, Major General John Bell, laid the foundation stone.

The ceremony was attended by the Island's Bailiff, local officials, the Militia and large crowds of islanders.

Access :- The tower is kept locked but can be accessed by visitors who may collect the key from Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery in Candle Gardens during normal opening hours
