The Pass of Drumochter was created by glacial activity during successive ice ages. It forms the high point between the rivers of Garry to the south and Truim to the north.
This natural route through the mountains was first exploited by General Wade who built a road through here in the 18th century. Now it is the main route for four methods of communication, the A9 road, the Highland Main Railway Line, the Sunstrans National Cycle Route 7, and the Beauly to Denny power line. The area is constantly under snow during the winter.
The highest point of the pass is at 1516 feet (462 Metres) and is marked by a large sign at the roadside of the southbound side of the A9. The sign is a couple of hundred yards south of a lay-by and is on the Perth & Kinross side of the border with the Highland Region. A closer lay-by sits nearly opposite the sign on the northbound side of the road.
